日本文明の源流とも言われる九州。しかし、日本の最南端に位置するこの島を訪れる観光客は少ない。このドキュメンタリーでは、日本の近代的な都市と、田舎の伝統的な習慣を対比させています。鉄道の旅は、都市人口250万人の福岡を出発し、島の南端、指宿に到着します。鉄道の旅は、時を超えて、日本の4つの主要な島のうち最も南に位置する島の驚くべき多様性とコントラストを見せてくれます。この旅では、壮大な風景を眺めるだけでなく、異国の文化、古代の伝統と現代のライフスタイルを深く理解することができます。西洋では、九州は "日出ずる国 "の中でもあまり知られていない地域のひとつです。日本人にとっても、この緑豊かな山の島は、主に休暇を過ごす場所として認識されています。ヨーロッパ人がこの地域を訪れることはほとんどありませんが、「Wolfgang」「Bavaria」「Côte d'Azur」などの名前を持つレストランやカフェがたくさんあります。旅行ガイドによると、これらの言葉は日本人にとって「ヨーロッパ的」な響きがあるそうです。天皇家も九州の出身です。誇り高き戦士であるサムライの王朝のルーツもここにあります。また、九州にはいくつもの活火山があります。中でも有名なのが阿蘇山です。頂上のカルデラ（お釜のようなくぼみ）の周囲は約120kmにも及びます。

'Kyushu is said to be the wellspring of Japanese civilization. Yet few tourists visit the southernmost of Japan's main islands. This documentary contrasts modern Japanese cities with traditional customs in the countryside. The rail journey begins in Fukuoka - a city with a metro population of 2.5 million - and ends at the southern tip of the island, in the city of Ibusuki. As the train rolls along, it travels through time - and reveals the amazing diversity and contrasts of the most southerly of Japan's four main islands. The trip provides spectacular landscape views, as well as deep insight into a foreign culture, and its ancient traditions and modern lifestyles. In the West, Kyushu is one of the lesser-known regions in the "Land of the Rising Sun." Even for the Japanese, the green, mountainous island is seen mostly as a holiday spot. Europeans rarely visit this part of the country - but there are plenty of restaurants and cafes that have names like "Wolfgang," "Bavaria," or "Côte d'Azur." Travel guides say that these words sound "European" to Japanese. The family of the emperor, or Tenno, comes from Kyushu as well. This is also where the dynasties of the proud warrior class, the samurai, have their roots. And there are a number of active volcanoes on Kyushu. One of the most famous is Mount Aso. Its caldera - the cauldron-like hollow at the top -- has a circumference of about 120 kilometers.'

'Can trees help save Phoenix from extreme heat? It’s time to stop looking at trees as a form of “beautification.” They are, instead, a living form of infrastructure, providing a variety of services that include stormwater management, air filtering, carbon sequestration, and, most importantly for a city like Phoenix, Arizona, they cool the environment around them. Trees can lower neighborhood temperatures in three ways: 1) Their shade prevents solar radiation from hitting paved surfaces like concrete and asphalt, which absorb energy and rerelease it into the air as heat. 2) Their leaves pull heat from the immediate area in order to evapotranspirate water that’s drawn from the soil. And, 3) If you’re standing under one, a tree protects your body directly from the sun’s rays. If you’ve ever made a summer visit to a dry, hot city like Phoenix, you’ll know how important shade is for making any outdoor experiences tolerable. As Phoenix deals with a rising frequency of extreme heat waves — which aren’t only deadly, but also cause worrisome spikes in energy demand — the city is looking to trees as part of its heat mitigation strategy. Phoenix isn’t devoid of trees, but they’re distributed unevenly across the city. A quick glance at a satellite image of the metro area reveals substantial green splotches in the north and east and brown ones in the south and west, where many lower-income neighborhoods are located. So Phoenix recently pledged to reach “tree equity” by 2030, under an agreement with American Forests, a national tree organization. I visited Phoenix recently to take a look at the current state of the city’s urban forest. In this video, we use drone imagery and thermal cameras to understand how the urban design of the city contributes to extreme heat, and what it can do to cool down. '
