世界保健機関（WHO）がパンデミック（世界的大流行）を正式に宣言する1カ月半以上前、バイオンテック社のCEOであるUğurŞahin氏は、妻でありバイオンテック社の共同設立者でチーフメディカルオフィサーのÖzlem Türeci氏と会い、会社のリソースのほとんどをワクチン開発に振り向けることで合意しました。それまでのバイオンテック社は、国際的にはあまり知られておらず、主に新規のがん治療薬の開発に注力していました。
